When people think of strength training, they often think of punishing workouts and young athletes pushing themselves to the limit.
The truth is much simpler. Strength training is, and should be for everyone. I’ve been a personal trainer in Brighton now well over 20 years and one things I’ve discovered is the best things you can do for your longevity, mobility and long-term health.
Today I wanted to share with you a great story of recovery. Rebecca has trained with me around a decade. She’s over 60 and has recently this year had a total hip replacement and now is well on her way to her first unassisted chin-ups.

Rebecca started my personal training sessions in Brighton about a decade ago to build strength. stability and mobility and to help her in her pursuit of competitive swimming. Unfortunately after coming off her bicycle she had to have her hip replaced. Her resilience after the operation was amazing and her strength she had built over the years made her rehab much easier than it would’ve been otherwise.
Chin-ups are one of the best markers for upper-body strength and I believe everyone should work towards them regardless of age or weight. Sensible regressions exist for every body type, and the pursuit of strength, especially upper body pulling strength is vital if you are to age well.
This picture is from this weeks personal training session with Rebecca. Easily achieving 10 reps (she has done more) on the assisted chin up, using the band as assistance.

Now we will move to a lighter band for a lower rep range and work the reps back up again over the weeks before moving into unassisted chin-ups.
